Dr Blas Cabrera, American physicist. He built the first magnetic monopole detector in 1981 & found the first magnetic monopole candidate. He is seen with his current magnetic monopole detector in the basement of the physics department, Stanford Univ- ersity, California, in June 1984. The core of the detector is 3 loops of superconducting wire (not visible) which register any magnetic charge, which is then monitored by 3 SQUIDs (Superconducting Quantum Interference Device) which are in the 3 grey boxes evenly spaced around the detector. Magnetic monopoles are important for Grand Unified Theories in physics, for Big Bang theory, and for the hidden mass problem in cosmology.
