Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), British manufacturer and engineer. Boulton followed his father into the manufacturing industry before entering into partnership with John Fothergill (died 1782) around 1760. They set up the Soho Manufactory, Birmingham, England, for manufacturing artistic objects in metal. A firm believer in the benefits of technology, Boulton was interested in James Watt's (1736-1819) work on the steam engine. When Watt's business partner went bankrupt, Boulton entered into partnership with Watt, helping him both financially and intellectually.
