Emil Abderhalden (1877-1950), Swiss physiologist. Abderhalden spent most of his early career in Berlin, having come to the city from Basel to work under Nobel laureate Emil Fischer. He returned to Switzerland in 1945. He worked on the physiological chemistry of metabolism, writing several textbooks on the subject and founding two journals. During World War I he established a children's hospital and facilitated the evacuation of undernourished German children to Switzerland. This portrait is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from the 1890s to the 1930s.
