Louisa Brandreth Aldrich-Blake (1865-1925), British physician. Aldrich-Blake trained at the London (Royal Free Hospital) School of Medicine for Women, graduating in 1893. She then became the first woman to qualify as a surgeon, becoming a senior surgeon in 1910. She worked at the Royal Free and the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital. During World War I, her responsibilities increased and she became a consultant surgeon. Aldrich-Blake also trained other women as doctors, becoming Dean in 1914 of the school where she had studied 21 years earlier. She was made Dame CBE in 1924. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
