Wood engraving of the English physician Elisabeth Garrett Anderson (1836-1917) being examined by the Board of Medical Examiners at the University of Paris. She was the first English woman doctor and pioneered the admission of women into medicine. She began her studies in 1860 but had difficulty qualifying as a doctor because of opposition to women. In 1865 she passed the Apothecaries' Hall examination and finally in 1870 obtained her medical degree from the University of Paris. Anderson established in 1866, despite prejudiced opposition, a dispensary for women which survives as the Elisabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital.
