US Navy Marine Mammal Program, San Diego, USA. This Navy facility researches and trains sea mammals to perform underwater tasks that help the military. Sectioned water-filled pens contain bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) and other sea mammals. Tasks include, detecting suspicious objects, delivering equipment to divers, locating lost objects, surveillance using an attached camera and guarding against intruders. The US Navy trains dolphins, sea lions, killer whales and beluga whales. Dolphins were first used during the Vietnam war in the early 1970s and most recently in Iraq in 2003.
