The plant was grown as part of a research project at Newcastle University, UK, into the synthesis of galantamine, an alkaloid found in the bulbs of Narcissus and related species. Galantamine is utilised by the pharmaceutical industry in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. The plants are grown hydroponically in differing nutrient solutions to determine whether the composition of the solution has an effect on the amount of galantamine produced by the plants. The plants are dissected when they reach anthesis, the stage where they are fully open and functional.
