Genetically modified mosquito's eyes. Eyes of a mosquito (Anopheles stephensi), glowing red under ultraviolet light. The gene for DsRed, a red fluorescent protein, has been introduced into the mosquito genome from the coral Discosoma sp. Placing a gene from one organism into the genome of another is called transgenics. The red glow shows that the DsRed gene has been successfully introduced. This raises hopes that a gene could be introduced that would make the mosquitoes unable to carry the Plasmodium sp. protozoa that cause malaria, which would save millions of lives.
