Virtual reality modelling, 4th century Rome. Researchers using scanning equipment to record the dimensions and details of a scale model of ancient Rome in the 4th century. The data will be used to create an interactive model for exploring the city, either using a computer, or using virtual reality systems. This is the scale model at the Museum of Roman Civilisation, near Rome, Italy. The model, designed by Italo Gismondi, is 1:250 scale, measures 20 by 20 metres, and was constructed from 1935 to 1971. This scanning work was carried out by researchers from the University of Florence and the Polytechnic School of Milan.
