Shanty town. This is Tupac Amaru, a shanty town on the outskirts of Lima, Peru, that is also the site of the large Inca cemetery Puruchuco-Huaquerones. The area was settled in 1989 by refugees escaping guerrilla fighting in the mountains. Thousands of mummified bodies were excavated in this area in the period from 1999-2001, but many of the mummies had been damaged by water and sewage. A new dig, in 2004, on the north-western edge of the site, found over 40 well-preserved mummies. The mummies and the artifacts buried with them, date back more than 500 years to the time of the Inca Empire.
