Potash in a gardener's hand. Potash is the generic name for several inorganic crystalline plant fertilisers containing potassium (K). Potassium helps water regulation in plants and plays an important part in the formation of starch and sugars. It also helps to counterbalance an excess of nitrogen in soil. Some forms of potash are also used to adjust the pH of soil.
