Camargue Delta, France, satellite image. North is at top. The Camargue, in France, is a delta at the mouth of the River Rhone where it meets the Mediterranean Sea. It is a vast plain comprising large brine lagoons (etangs, one seen at lower centre) cut off from the sea by sandbars and encircled by reed-covered marshes which are in turn surrounded by a large cultivated area. The Camargue is cut off on either side by two arms of the River Rhone (both seen here, at right and left). Approximately a third of the Camargue is either lakes or marshland. Image data obtained on 30 September 1989.
