Crimean coast, seen from space. Satellite view of the north-east coast of the Crimean Peninsula, Ukraine. At right is the Sea of Azov. At centre and left is a large lagoon known as the Gniloye Morye. The lagoon is fed with water via the small delta seen just above centre. Gniloye Morye has no outlet, it loses water only by evaporation. Consequently, the lagoon is very salty. In some parts of the lagoon, the salt is 'bedded' (removed in salt beds) commercially. The long spit of land enclosing the lagoon at right is part of the Arabatskaya Strelka, a beach about 100 kilometres in length. The data for this image were gathered by a Landsat satellite.
