Basilosauruses, computer artwork. Basilosaurus was an early whale that inhabited the seas during the late Eocene period, 45-36 million years ago. It preyed on other marine mammals and could have grown up to 18 metres in length. Like modern whales it breathed air, but lacked a blow hole, instead it breathed through nostrils.
