Hominid fossil skull 1470 named after its museum number & thought to be an example of Homo habilis, or 'handy man'. It is surrounded by wind-polished pebbles from surface deposits near the discovery site. The skull was found by Richard Leakey's team at East Turkana, Kenya, in 1972. Debate surrounded the identification & age of 1470: some thought it resembled the australopithecines while others that it belonged with Homo. Initially the skull was dated at 2.6 million years, making it 'the Oldest Man' found. Later the age was revised to 1.8 million years. Fossil evidence of H.habilis gives the species a wide distribution in Africa, & a timespan from 2.1 to 1.8 million years ago.
