Cooled pahoehoe lava. This thick lava with a ropey texture can flow at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Pahoehoe is a basaltic lava with a low melting point. The crust insulates the lava keeping it molten allowing it to travel great distances from its origin. Photographed in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii, USA.
