Home Reef, a new island in Tonga, satellite image. North is at top. The new island is just below centre, masked by a bright cloud of steam. It formed in mid-2006 through the eruptions of the previously submarine volcano Home Reef. The eruption produced extensive rafts of floating pumice rock, which drifted northeast from the island. The pumice is the grey expanse (centre), just northeast of the small island of Late. The Vava'u archipelago is right of the pumice raft. This image was taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument on the Aqua Earth observation satellite on 10th August 2006.
