Mount Pelee, Martinique, satellite image. North is at top. Mount Pelee (centre, on the north side of the bay) is the only active volcano on the Caribbean island of Martinique. It overlooks the town of Saint Pierre. This volcano is famous for its 1902 eruption that killed somewhere between 26,000 and 32,000 people, one of the only survivors being a prisoner in an underground jail. The island of Martinique has an area of 1128 square kilometres. Image data obtained on 4 January 2001.
