Aerial photograph of El Chichon crater after the eruptions on March 28th & again on April 3rd & 4th 1982, which destroyed about 100 square kilometres of rainforest. A sulphur-laden plume of ash was hurled 16.8 kilometres into the atmosphere; within weeks a sulphuric acid cloud encircled the earth, apparently affecting global weather patterns. (March 1984)
