Sea ice. Aerial photograph of sea ice in Disco Bay, Greenland. The freezing water has formed ice floes that break up through the action of waves. As the ice floes collide with each other, the edges become rounded and form 'pancake' ice. Freshly frozen sea water, known an frazil ice connects the pancake ice`. A channel of unfrozen water from top centre down to bottom centre has smaller ice structures known as rime floating on the surface. This is caused by the freezing of moisture in fog. Rime also covers the surface of the ice floes.
