Madagascar, satellite image. North is at top. This is the world's fourth largest island. It is situated in the Indian Ocean off of the east coast of Africa. The east of the island is dominated by a habitat of tropical rainforests whilst in the south and west a much drier climate prevails. Due to its long isolation from the surrounding continents, Madagascar is home to a wide variety of indigenous species including all of the world's species of lemur.
