The seed capsule comprises the remains of the flower after the petals have fallen. When the capsule has fully ripened, mature seeds are released by the organized process of dehiscence (dehydration & splitting), through window-like pores in the top of the capsule. At this time the pericarp, the capsule wall, is dead & hard.
