Papyrus. View of papyrus plants (Cyperus papyrus), a type of reed. They have stout bare stems with regular offshoots of long thin leaves. The plant normally grows to a height of between one and three metres. Its pith was used to produce paper by the ancient Egyptians. The papyrus originated in Syria and tropical Africa, and was introduced into Europe in 1803.
