Kelp holdfast (Laminaria digitata.). This is a root-like structure with which the blade of kelp is attached to the sea-bed. Holdfasts provide a habitat for limpets, bryozoans, hydroids and sea spiders. Kelp is used in the production of glass, soap and foodstuffs. Photographed in Devon, UK.
