False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a thin section of a budding yeast cell, Lipomyces sp. Yeast is a kind of single-celled fungus. Budding is a method of asexual reproduction in which a new individual (top right) is derived from an outgrowth that becomes detached from the body of the parent (the large central cell). The yellow regions within the parent are lipid bodies; consisting of glycerol and fatty acids, they serve as reservoirs for potential chemical energy and as sources of short carbon chains for use in cell growth and function. Note that this species contains an unusually large store of lipid. Magnification: x4000 at 6x4.5cm size.
