Its cell wall is red, with cell contents yellow/brown; two daughter cells are being formed. This psychrophilic (cold-loving) bacterium is a food spoilage organism. First isolated from chilled sausage meat, it can also spoil other food stored at low temperatures in a refrigerator. It has been found in soil & cold waters, including those from Antarctica. It grows in temperatures as low as -2 degrees Celsius. Extremophile bacteria live in extreme conditions, such as low tempera- ture. Magnification: x37,000 at 6x7cm size.
