Cyproterone. Molecular model of the antiandrogen drug cyproterone. The drug's main use is in the treatment of prostate cancer. The prostate is a gland beneath the bladder in men which contributes seminal fluid to the ejaculate. Anti-androgens block the uptake of the male hormone testosterone by the prostate gland. This leads to the death of cancerous cells. The drug is taken with a luteinising hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH) analogue, which effectively inscastratesins the patient. This combination starves the tumour. Side-effects include nausea, decreased libido and the enlargement of one or both breasts. Atoms are colour-coded: carbon (purple), hydrogen (white), oxygen (yellow) and chlorine (green).
