Raloxifene osteoporosis drug, molecular model. This drug, marketed as Evista, is used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Oestrogen, a female sex hormone, increases the activity of osteoblasts, the cells that manufacture bone. When oestrogen levels fall after the menopause, women are at higher risk of osteoporosis, or reduced bone mineral density. Raloxifene mimics the effect of oestrogen in bone, stimulating bone production. However, as it blocks oestrogen receptors in other tissues, it causes fewer side effects than oestrogen itself. In this model, atoms are represented by coloured spheres; carbon is green, hydrogen is small and yellow, oxygen is blue, nitrogen is purple, and sulphur is large and yellow.
