Tyre, Lebanon, combined infrared and visible light satellite image. North is at top. The city of Tyre occupies the peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean Sea at upper left. In this image, water is black, built up areas are grey, vegetation is green and bare ground is brown. Tyre usually has a population of around 117,000. During the 2006 Israeli attack on Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, up to 90% of the city's inhabitants are thought to have fled. Tyre, which is thought to contain several sites from which Hezbollah fires rockets into Israel (to the south), has been one of the main Israeli targets, along with the Lebanese capital Beirut (out of frame at top). Image taken by the Landsat 7 satellite.
