Deadly nightshade flowers (Atropa belladonna). This plant is highly poisonous. It contains the toxic alkaloid atropine, which is used by ophthalmologists to dilate pupils during eye examinations. It is also an antidote to poisoning by nerve agents. Consumption of this plant produces vivid hallucinations, though it is rarely used as a recreational narcotic. It is one of the most well known members of the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Photographed at the Dilston physic Garden, Northumberland, UK.
