Igor Yevgenyevich Tamm (1895-1971), Russian physicist and Nobel Laureate. Tamm (third from left) was born in Vladivostock, Russia. He graduted from Moscow State University in 1918 and began studying crystallo-optics before becoming interested in the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. He worked on Cerenkov radiation with Ilya Frank and Pavel Cerenkov, with whom he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1958. At the end of his career he turned his attention towards methods for the control of thermonuclear reactions.
