The female moth lays her eggs in the immature ovaries of the flowers of the Mexican jumping bean shrub (Sebastiana sp.). When the flower is pollinated the eggs become trapped inside the seeds and the larvae start to develop, eating the innards of the seed. When exposed to light and heat the larva move inside the seed causing it to 'jump'. After several months the larva spins a cocoon inside the bean and starts its metamorphosis into a moth.
