First flight of the Ariane 4 rocket, 15 June 1988. The launch took place at the European Space Agency spaceport at Kourou, French Guiana. The configur- ation chosen for the mission was the '44LP', the basic Ariane 4 supplemented by two solid fuel and two liquid fuel boosters. This flight carried three satellites into orbit: Meteosat 3, PanAmSat 1, and Amsat 3C. Ariane 4 is the prime launcher for the European Space Agency until the advent of Ariane 5 services, due in late 1995.
